Windows doors

French Doors

French doors are a pair of hinged glazed doors that open from the centre, commonly connecting an interior room to a garden, balcony or adjoining space.

French doors admit light across much of the opening while giving direct access when both leaves are open. They differ from sliding doors, which move sideways, and bi-fold doors, which fold in several leaves.

In an Edinburgh renovation, the design should consider the opening width, available swing space, threshold and how the doors meet an existing wall or extension. Weather seals, drainage and security hardware matter as much as the glazing.

If a larger opening is being formed, the structure above and at the sides needs assessment. In a period or protected building, the appearance of the new doors and changes to the external wall may also affect the design and approval process.
