Gable

A gable is the upper section of an end wall beneath the slopes of a pitched roof, often forming a triangular shape.

A gable wall closes the end of a pitched roof and can be made from stone, brick or another wall material. The junction between its masonry and the roof covering needs reliable weathering.

In Edinburgh terraces and tenements, a gable can be particularly exposed to wind-driven rain. Staining near the roof edge may call for inspection of pointing, coping, flashings and adjacent slates rather than a single interior patch.

Gable also describes the end form of the roof. Work at a shared or exposed gable should consider the wall, roof junction and access for repairs together.
