Herringbone Flooring

Herringbone flooring is a floor laid in a repeating zigzag pattern of rectangular pieces set at right angles to one another.

Herringbone names the laying pattern, not the material. Timber, engineered timber and some tiles can be laid this way. The ends of adjacent pieces meet along the zigzag rather than forming continuous straight rows.

In an Edinburgh room with a chimney breast, bay or uneven walls, the pattern needs careful setting out so the borders and cuts feel balanced. A small error at the start becomes conspicuous across a large floor.

The substrate must suit the selected product and fixing method. Herringbone is related to parquet flooring, a broader term for geometric patterns made from smaller pieces.
