Insulation

Insulation is material or construction used to reduce the transfer of heat, sound or electricity between spaces or through parts of a building.

In building work, the term most often refers to thermal or acoustic products installed in roofs, walls and floors. Different materials have different performance, moisture behaviour, fire characteristics and installation requirements.

Insulation works only as part of a complete build-up. Gaps, compression, thermal bridges, uncontrolled air leakage or trapped moisture can significantly reduce performance and create defects.

For an Edinburgh period property, the existing fabric should be understood before insulation is added. A solution suited to modern cavity construction may not be appropriate for a traditional solid wall.
