Kitchen Island

A kitchen island is a freestanding or fixed work unit positioned away from the surrounding walls, often providing preparation space, storage or seating.

An island may contain drawers, cupboards, a sink, hob or appliances, depending on the room and service routes. Its size should follow the circulation space around it rather than simply filling the centre of the plan.

In an Edinburgh kitchen extension, the island often becomes the point around which doors, glazing and dining space are organised. Routes between tall units, cooking areas and garden access need to remain comfortable when doors and drawers are open.

If water, power or extraction is required, these services should be designed before the floor is finished. A movable table can sometimes perform the same social role with greater flexibility in a smaller room.
