Loft extensions

Loft Conversion/Attic Conversion

A loft or attic conversion turns space within an existing roof into usable accommodation, usually involving structural, access, insulation and fire-safety work.

Loft conversion and attic conversion are commonly used for the same type of project: creating habitable space within the roof of an existing building. The work is more involved than boarding a loft for storage.

An Edinburgh conversion may require altered floor structure, a permanent stair, insulation, roof windows or dormers, ventilation and suitable escape and fire-protection measures. The available headroom and existing roof form determine what is realistically possible.

Tenements, townhouses and villas each present different constraints, including shared roofs, common stairs and historic fabric. The structural design and approval route should be established before the layout is treated as settled.

A rooflight conversion generally works within the existing roof profile, while a dormer or mansard conversion changes the external roof form to create additional space.
