Mansard Roof

A mansard roof has a steep lower slope and a shallower upper slope, creating more usable space beneath the roof than a simple pitched form.

The change in pitch gives a mansard its characteristic profile. Dormer windows may sit within the steep lower slope, though details vary by building.

Edinburgh roof alterations and attic accommodation can involve mansard forms, but the design cannot be judged only by the extra interior space it provides. Structure, drainage, neighbouring roofs and the street elevation all matter.

Where a mansard is proposed or repaired on a historic property, check the building’s status and the approvals relevant to the work. The junction between the two pitches also needs careful weathering.
