Walls plaster

Plasterboard

Plasterboard is a manufactured board with a gypsum core, used to form internal walls and ceilings before jointing or plaster finishing.

Plasterboard is fixed to a frame or, where suitable, to a prepared wall. It provides a regular surface that can be taped and jointed or finished with a thin plaster skim.

It is often used in Edinburgh refurbishments for new partitions, ceilings and altered layouts. Board type, thickness and fixing method depend on what the wall or ceiling needs to do, including moisture resistance, acoustics and fire performance.

Boarding over an older surface should not hide active damp, unstable plaster or a structural defect. Where original lath and plaster survives, deciding whether to repair or replace it calls for a separate assessment.
