Walls plaster

Plastering

Plastering is the application or repair of a plaster finish to walls and ceilings to create a suitable surface for decoration.

Plastering can mean applying a finish coat to sound plasterboard, repairing an existing surface or rebuilding several layers on masonry. These are different jobs with different preparation needs.

In Edinburgh renovations, the substrate may be modern board, old lath and plaster or traditional stone masonry. A smooth finish alone does not prove the wall is dry, stable or compatible with the materials used beneath it.

Before work begins, check for loose material, movement and moisture. The approach should suit the building and the intended finish, particularly when original plaster or decorative mouldings are being retained.
