Rafter

A rafter is a sloping structural member that supports a pitched roof and carries roof loads toward the walls or other supports.

Rafters usually run from a lower roof support toward the ridge. Their spacing, size and connections are part of the roof design, and they may support sarking or other layers beneath the outer covering.

In an Edinburgh attic renovation, a rafter cannot simply be cut to make room for a roof window or extra headroom. The surrounding roof structure and the route by which loads reach the walls need assessment first.

Leaks can also damage rafter ends or other concealed timbers. A repair should address the water-entry point as well as the affected wood.
