Roof Window/Skylight

A roof window or skylight is a glazed opening in a roof that brings daylight into the space below; the terms may describe different opening and installation types.

A roof window is often an operable unit set into the plane of a pitched roof. Skylight is a broader everyday term that can include fixed roof glazing or other forms of overhead light.

In Edinburgh attic conversions and extensions, position, size and opening style affect daylight, ventilation and the layout beneath the roof. The structure around the opening and the flashings that keep out rain must be designed together.

Before cutting an existing roof, check its construction and the approvals relevant to that property, particularly if the building is listed or in a conservation area. Accurate weathering and insulation details matter as much as the choice of glass.
