Second Fix

Second fix is the stage when visible fittings, finishes and joinery are installed after the main structure, concealed services and wall finishes are substantially complete.

Typical work includes doors, skirting boards, architraves, sockets, switches, sanitary fittings, taps and final connections. Kitchen units and other fitted items may also form part of this stage.

Accurate first-fix positions are vital because second-fix components must align with finished walls, floors and service outlets. Poor coordination becomes conspicuous once decorative surfaces are complete.

The term describes a project stage rather than a single trade. Sequencing should protect finished work while allowing testing, adjustment and final decoration to proceed efficiently.
