Secondary Glazing

Secondary glazing is an additional glazed panel installed inside an existing window, leaving the original window in place.

An inner glazed layer can improve comfort and reduce draughts and outside noise when appropriately designed and fitted. It differs from double glazing, where both panes form a single sealed unit within the primary window.

For an Edinburgh sash and case window, secondary glazing may allow the existing frame and external appearance to be retained. The inner system still needs to work with access for cleaning, operation, shutters and room ventilation.

The gap and detailing between the two windows matter. Poorly planned installation can make existing moisture issues harder to manage, so the condition of the original window should be checked first.
