Loft extensions

Single-Storey Extension

A single-storey extension adds accommodation on one level, commonly to the rear or side of an existing house.

Single-storey extensions are often used to enlarge a kitchen, add a utility room or create a more generous living and dining space. The roof may be flat, pitched or formed from a combination of elements.

In Edinburgh, the design needs to respond to the existing house, garden, boundaries and neighbouring properties. Glazing and rooflights can improve daylight, but they must be coordinated with structure, drainage and heat loss.

Opening the original external wall to connect old and new rooms may be a substantial structural alteration. The extension, internal layout and service routes should therefore be designed as one project.
