Specification

A construction specification is a written document defining the required materials, products, workmanship, performance and standards for a building project.

Drawings show the form and location of the work, while the specification describes qualities that may not be clear graphically. The two documents are intended to be read together.

A specification can cover preparation, installation, tolerances, finishes, testing and samples. Clear requirements reduce reliance on vague phrases such as “to match existing” or “contractor’s choice”.

For traditional Edinburgh buildings, the specification is particularly important for compatible stone, lime mortar, plaster, timber and repair techniques that generic modern products may not replicate.
