Stonework

Stonework is the construction, repair or detailing of building elements made from natural stone, including walls, façades, steps, copes and architectural features.

Stonework can include rubble masonry, dressed ashlar, carved details and individual replacement stones. The term covers both the material and the craft used to form and repair it.

On an Edinburgh property, defects may include open joints, eroded faces, cracked stones, failed previous repairs or displaced copes. The visible symptom should be assessed alongside moisture paths and structural movement.

Compatible stone and lime mortar are normally important in traditional work. Repair should retain sound historic fabric rather than replacing it merely to achieve a uniformly new appearance.
