Floors

Subfloor

A subfloor is the supporting layer beneath a finished floor surface, providing a base for boards, tiles or other floor finishes.

A subfloor may consist of timber boards or sheet material over joists, or a solid base such as concrete. The finished floor sits above it, sometimes with underlay or other layers between.

During an Edinburgh property renovation, lifting a finish can reveal uneven boards, past repairs, moisture or altered services. The subfloor must be suitable for the proposed finish; tiling, for example, places different demands on movement and stiffness from carpet.

If a floor feels springy or slopes, investigate the joists and supports rather than levelling only the visible surface. In older properties, ventilation and moisture below a timber floor also affect the repair approach.
