Temporary Support

Temporary support is the short-term propping or bracing used to carry or stabilise part of a building while permanent structural work is carried out.

When a load-bearing wall is opened or a lintel replaced, the structure above cannot simply be left unsupported until the new beam is installed. Temporary supports carry the relevant loads during a defined stage of the work.

The method depends on what the wall supports, the condition of the building and where props can safely bear. In an Edinburgh flat, floors above and below, neighbouring property and older masonry can make the support sequence especially important.

Temporary support is one part of temporary works: the wider plan may also cover access, restraints, sequencing and safe removal of the supports after the permanent structure is in place.
