Thermal Insulation

Thermal insulation is material designed to slow the flow of heat through a building element such as a roof, wall or floor.

Its performance is commonly considered through thermal conductivity, thickness and the resulting heat-transfer value of the complete construction. Continuity is important because gaps and bridges can bypass the insulated areas.

Roof, floor, internal-wall and external-wall insulation each create different junctions and moisture risks. Vapour control, ventilation and airtightness should be designed together rather than treated as unrelated layers.

In traditional Edinburgh buildings, thermal upgrades need particular care around solid masonry, timber joist ends, cornices and window reveals. The aim is improved comfort without trapping moisture or damaging historic fabric.
