Trussed Rafters

Trussed rafters are prefabricated structural roof frames that combine sloping rafters and internal members into an engineered truss.

A trussed rafter spreads roof loads through its full arrangement of timber members and connector plates. The diagonals and ties are structural parts of the system, even if they appear to obstruct the loft space.

Some later Edinburgh houses and extensions use trussed rafters. Turning such a roof void into a room, or cutting a member for a new opening, requires a designed structural solution rather than removal of the pieces in the way.

The roof should be identified before loft work begins. A trussed-rafter roof behaves differently from a traditional cut roof formed from individual rafters and supports.
