Underfloor Heating

Underfloor heating is a heating system installed beneath the finished floor that warms the room through the floor surface.

Systems may circulate warm water through pipework or use electric heating elements. Their build-up, controls, operating temperatures and installation needs differ.

In an Edinburgh renovation, floor height and insulation are early design constraints, especially in an existing flat where door thresholds and joist spaces are already fixed. The floor finish must also be compatible with the selected system.

A successful installation considers heat loss, the supporting floor, moisture, controls and access for future maintenance. Adding heating below an existing floor without planning the complete build-up can leave uneven performance or awkward level changes.
