Roofing

Valley

A roof valley is the internal angle where two roof slopes meet and channel rainwater down toward the eaves or a gutter.

Valleys collect water from both adjoining roof planes. Their covering, adjacent slates and outlet need to work together to keep rain out of the roof structure.

Edinburgh roofs with dormers or intersecting slopes can contain valleys that are hard to see from the street. Debris, failed lining or displaced slates may cause water to back up and enter beneath the covering.

When a leak appears below a valley, check the full run and the drainage at its lower end. A patch directly above the interior stain may miss the point where water entered.
