Window Seat

A window seat is built-in seating positioned at or below a window, sometimes with storage underneath.

A window seat can make use of a bay, deep reveal or low area beneath a window. It may incorporate drawers or a hinged lid, depending on the depth and access available.

In an Edinburgh flat or townhouse, the design has to work around sash window operation, radiators, skirtings and the shape of the opening. A handsome seat that blocks ventilation or makes a window difficult to use is poorly planned.

Where the seat sits against an external wall, check the wall condition and detail the construction to avoid trapping moisture. Cushion dimensions and comfortable seat height are best considered before the joinery is made.
