Acoustic Insulation

Acoustic insulation is material and construction used to reduce the transmission of airborne or impact sound between rooms, floors or adjoining properties.

Absorbent mineral wool within a void can form part of the solution, but effective sound reduction also depends on mass, airtightness, separation and careful junction details.

Airborne sound includes speech and music, while impact sound is generated by footsteps or objects striking a surface. Floors and partitions may need different build-ups depending on the noise route being addressed.

In an Edinburgh tenement, sound can flank through walls, joists, chimneys and service penetrations. Treating only the visibly shared surface may therefore give disappointing results.
