Boundary Wall

A boundary wall is a wall that defines or encloses the edge of a property, garden, courtyard or shared area.

Boundary walls may be stone, brick, block or rendered masonry and can include copes, railings, gates and piers. They may also retain ground, although a retaining wall has additional structural demands.

Traditional Edinburgh boundary walls are often exposed to weather from both sides. Failed copes, vegetation, open joints and trapped moisture can destabilise masonry over time.

Before altering or rebuilding a boundary wall, ownership, neighbouring interests, height, location and any planning or conservation constraints should be checked. Matching stonework and lime mortar can be important in historic settings.
