Cement Pointing

Cement pointing is masonry jointing carried out with a mortar in which Portland cement provides most or all of the binder.

Cement mortar can be appropriate for some modern masonry designed for it, but it is often harder, less flexible and less vapour permeable than traditional lime mortar.

On softer Edinburgh sandstone, hard cement pointing can force moisture to escape through the stone rather than the joint. This may contribute to surface erosion, trapped damp and damage along stone edges.

Existing cement pointing should be assessed rather than removed indiscriminately. Its condition, the risk of damaging the masonry during removal and the compatible replacement specification all matter.
