Structural terms

Contract Administrator

A contract administrator is the person appointed to administer a building contract impartially in accordance with its stated procedures and terms.

The role may include issuing instructions, assessing applications for payment, certifying completion, recording changes and dealing with contractual notices. The exact duties depend on the chosen contract.

An architect, surveyor or another suitably experienced professional may act as contract administrator, but the role is separate from being the designer or contractor.

For a renovation, clear contract administration helps document decisions, costs and responsibilities as concealed conditions and design changes arise. It does not replace the contractor’s responsibility for carrying out the work.
