Corbel

A corbel is a projecting block or bracket built out from a wall to support an element above or to form a decorative architectural feature.

Stone corbels may support bays, balconies, arches, wall heads or other projections. Corbels can also be formed in timber, brick or plaster, and some are ornamental rather than substantially loadbearing.

On an Edinburgh stone building, cracks, open joints or displacement around a corbel should be assessed in relation to whatever it supports. Treating it as isolated decoration can miss a structural or water-ingress problem.

Repair should match the original material, bearing, fixing and profile. Sound historic stone should be conserved where practical, with replacement limited to material that can no longer perform safely.
