Dormer

A dormer is a roofed projection built out from a sloping roof, normally containing a window and creating additional headroom inside.

Dormers can have flat, pitched or other roof forms. They alter the external roof profile as well as the interior, so their proportions, cladding and weathering need to be considered together.

In an Edinburgh attic conversion, a dormer can make the difference between restricted roof space and a practical room. Its position must relate to the existing rafters, floor structure, stairs and surrounding roof drainage.

The cheeks, roof, window and junctions with the main roof are all vulnerable details if poorly designed. A dormer cheek is specifically one of the side walls of the projection.
