Dormer Cheek

A dormer cheek is one of the side walls of a dormer projecting from a sloping roof.

The cheeks connect the dormer front to the main roof and enclose the additional interior space. They may be clad in slate, metal, tiles or another suitable weather-resistant finish.

Because a dormer cheek meets both the dormer and the existing roof, its flashings, insulation and ventilation require careful detailing. A small failure at this junction can admit water into the concealed construction.

On an Edinburgh conversion, the external material and width of the cheek also affect how bulky the dormer appears. It should be designed as part of the whole dormer rather than treated as leftover infill.
