Foundations

Foundations are the parts of a building that transfer its loads safely into the ground.

Foundations may be formed as strips, pads, rafts, piles or another engineered system. Their type and depth depend on the proposed building, ground conditions and nearby structures rather than a universal standard detail.

For an Edinburgh extension, trial information and site conditions can affect the design, especially near existing buildings, drains, boundaries or made ground. The new work also has to meet the existing house without causing harmful movement.

Foundations are mostly hidden once construction advances, so setting out, excavation and inspection happen early. They should be designed for the actual loads and site rather than copied from a neighbouring project.
