External masonry

Harling

Harling is a traditional Scottish external wall finish in which a lime-based coating containing aggregate is cast or dashed onto masonry to create a textured protective surface.

Harling helps shelter underlying stone or rubble masonry from exposed weather while still allowing a traditionally constructed wall to manage moisture. Its texture comes from the applied aggregate and method of application.

Historic harling was commonly lime based, although later cement-rich coatings are also encountered. The two may look similar from a distance but can behave very differently on an older wall.

Repairs should consider the background, existing material, aggregate, finish and colour. Local patches that are too hard or too smooth can perform poorly and remain visually conspicuous.
