Landing

A landing is a level platform at the top, bottom or between flights of a staircase, providing access, rest space or a change of direction.

Intermediate landings divide longer stairs and allow one flight to turn into another. Their size and relationship to doors influence circulation and the safe use of the stair.

In an Edinburgh tenement or townhouse, a landing may also connect several rooms or form part of a shared stair. Its floor structure and finishes need to align correctly with the adjoining flights and thresholds.

A landing is different from a winder arrangement: a landing provides a level platform, while winders use tapered steps to achieve a turn within a compact area.
