Lime Mortar

Lime mortar is a vapour-permeable mortar made with lime, aggregate and water, traditionally used to bed and point stone or brick masonry.

Compared with many modern cement mortars, lime mortar is generally more flexible and allows moisture to evaporate through the joints. This helps traditional masonry accommodate small movements and dry as intended.

The correct lime, aggregate, colour and strength should suit the surrounding stone or brick and the building’s exposure. A mortar that is harder than the masonry can accelerate decay at the edges of the units.

Lime work also depends on preparation, curing and weather protection. Simply labelling a mix as lime mortar does not guarantee that it is compatible or has been applied correctly.
