Macerator

A macerator is a powered waste unit that breaks down toilet waste and pumps it through relatively small-diameter pipework to a suitable drain connection.

Macerators can make a toilet possible where a conventional gravity waste route is difficult, but they introduce a mechanical component that needs power, access and maintenance.

They should not be treated as an automatic shortcut for every awkward Edinburgh bathroom layout. Pipe route, lifting height, permitted connections, noise and the consequences of power or equipment failure all need consideration.

The chosen unit must suit the connected fixtures and be installed to its requirements. A conventional gravity connection is generally simpler where a practical route exists.
