Mansard Conversion

A mansard conversion reshapes or replaces the roof with a steep lower slope and shallower upper slope to create substantial usable accommodation.

Unlike a rooflight conversion that largely retains the existing roof profile, a mansard conversion makes a major change to the roof form. The steep lower face can create near-full-height rooms across more of the floor area.

In Edinburgh, the effect on the street, neighbouring roofs and historic character is central to whether a mansard form is appropriate. The work also involves a new structural roof, drainage, insulation and junctions with adjoining property.

Dormers may be incorporated into the steep face, but a mansard conversion is not simply an oversized dormer. It should be considered as a coordinated architectural, structural and approval project.
