External masonry

Masonry

Masonry is construction formed from individual units such as stone, brick or block, laid and bonded together, usually with mortar.

The units, bonding pattern and mortar work together to carry loads and resist weather. Masonry may form a solid wall, the leaves of a cavity wall, a chimney, a boundary wall or a decorative facing.

Traditional Edinburgh masonry is often stone built with lime mortar, while later construction may use brick, concrete block and cement-based materials. These systems do not all manage moisture in the same way.

Cracking, bulging or persistent damp should be diagnosed before isolated repairs are specified. The appropriate response depends on the wall construction, exposure, movement and condition of its joints.
