Mechanical Extraction

Mechanical extraction is the powered removal of air from rooms such as kitchens, bathrooms and utility spaces using fans and ductwork.

The system draws moisture, odours and pollutants toward a suitable external termination. Its actual performance depends on fan capacity, controls, duct length, bends and the availability of replacement air.

Mechanical extraction may be intermittent, continuously running or part of a whole-house system. It should be selected for the room and designed as a complete airflow route rather than as an isolated fan.

In an Edinburgh flat, long or awkward duct routes can reduce airflow and collect condensation. Noise, maintenance access and the external grille location should be resolved before finishes are closed.
