Staircases

Newel Post

A newel post is a substantial upright post that anchors a staircase balustrade, commonly positioned at the foot, head, landing or change of direction of the stair.

Unlike the smaller repeated balusters, a newel post is a primary support and termination point for handrails and strings. It may be plain, turned or finished with a decorative cap or finial.

Loose newels can make an entire balustrade feel unstable. Effective repair usually depends on understanding how the post is connected to the stair structure, not simply tightening the visible handrail.

Original newel posts are prominent features in many Edinburgh interiors. Where alteration is necessary, retaining or accurately matching their proportions can preserve the character of the staircase.
