Open-Plan Kitchen

An open-plan kitchen forms part of a larger shared living, dining or circulation space rather than being enclosed as a separate room.

Creating an open-plan kitchen may involve more than changing cabinets. Walls, doors, heating, lighting, ventilation and acoustic conditions all influence how the combined room works.

In an Edinburgh flat, opening the kitchen into an adjoining room requires confirmation of whether the wall is structural and what approvals apply. Fire separation and escape arrangements also need to be considered within the proposed layout.

The finished space should provide clear zones for cooking, eating and relaxing without awkward routes through the working area. A kitchen-diner is related, but does not necessarily include a full living area.
