Pointing

Pointing is the finished mortar placed in the exposed joints between stones, bricks or blocks to protect the masonry and shed water.

Good pointing fills the joint properly and is finished with a profile appropriate to the masonry. It is not merely a thin cosmetic layer spread across the face of an existing joint.

On traditional Edinburgh stonework, the mortar should usually remain more sacrificial and vapour permeable than the stone. The colour and texture also affect the appearance of the whole elevation.

Pointing describes the joint finish in new or existing work; repointing is the process of removing failed mortar and renewing those joints.
