Loft extensions

Rear Extension

A rear extension adds accommodation to the back of a property, often opening existing living spaces toward the garden.

Rear extensions are commonly used to enlarge a kitchen, create an open-plan dining area or improve the connection between house and garden. They may be single storey or extend over more than one level.

In Edinburgh, garden depth, neighbouring windows, boundary conditions and the character of the existing building all influence the design. Large areas of glazing still need suitable structure, drainage, shading and thermal performance.

Removing the original rear wall to connect old and new spaces may require substantial structural support. The extension and the altered room should therefore be designed as one project.
