Render

Render is a protective or decorative coating applied to an external wall, typically made from mineral mortar or a proprietary formulated system.

Render can create a smooth, textured or coloured finish and may be applied to masonry, blockwork or an approved board system. Its layers and detailing must suit the background and exposure.

Traditional lime render remains vapour permeable and can be appropriate for older solid walls. Dense cement render or impermeable coatings may restrict drying when used on construction that was designed to breathe.

Cracks and hollow areas should be investigated before patching. Failed junctions, movement, moisture penetration or incompatibility with the wall can be more important than the visible surface defect.
