Repointing

Repointing is the repair process of removing defective mortar from masonry joints and replacing it with new compatible mortar.

The joints must be carefully opened to a suitable depth without damaging the edges of the stone or brick. They are then cleaned, dampened where appropriate, filled and finished in controlled stages.

In Edinburgh sandstone buildings, repointing with a suitable lime mortar can help manage moisture and protect the stone. Hard cement-rich mortar may need particular care during removal because it can cling tightly to softer masonry.

Complete repointing is not automatically necessary when most joints remain sound. Targeted work can preserve more original mortar and avoid needless disturbance to the façade.
