Rooflight Conversion

A rooflight conversion creates usable attic accommodation while generally retaining the existing roof shape and introducing roof windows or rooflights for daylight and ventilation.

This approach can be less visually prominent than adding a dormer or mansard, but it still requires much more than installing glazing. The floor, stair, insulation, fire safety and roof structure all need to support habitable use.

In an Edinburgh property, the position of rooflights should work with rafters, room layout and views from the surrounding area. Alterations to a listed building or a roof in a conservation area require the relevant checks.

The term describes the conversion strategy. A roof window or skylight is the individual glazed element fitted into the roof.
