Loft extensions

Side Extension

A side extension adds enclosed space beside an existing house, using part of the land between the building and its boundary.

A side extension may provide a utility room, larger kitchen, garage conversion link or additional living accommodation. Its width and height are constrained by access, boundaries and the shape of the existing house.

For an Edinburgh property, the design should consider how the addition affects the street view, daylight, drainage and access to the rear garden. Existing services often run along the side of a house and may need to be incorporated or diverted.

A side return extension is a more specific form, commonly filling the narrow strip beside a rear projection rather than extending along the full side of a detached or semi-detached house.
