Loft extensions

Side Return Extension

A side return extension fills the narrow external strip beside a rear projection, commonly enlarging a kitchen or ground-floor living space.

The side return is often an underused passage at the back of a terraced or semi-detached house. Enclosing it can widen the interior without extending as far into the garden as a full-width rear addition.

The project usually changes drainage, daylight and the junction between the original rear rooms. Roof glazing may help bring light into the deeper plan, but its position and maintenance need to be designed carefully.

In Edinburgh, boundaries, neighbouring property and the original building form shape what is appropriate. Structural openings between the existing house and new space should be resolved alongside the extension design.
