Staircases

Staircase

A staircase is the complete construction of steps, landings and supporting components that connects different levels within a building.

A staircase may include strings, treads, risers, newel posts, balusters and handrails. Its geometry determines whether it feels comfortable and whether it fits safely within the available opening.

In an Edinburgh townhouse, tenement or loft conversion, changing a stair can affect floors, walls, headroom, circulation and fire strategy. It is therefore both an architectural feature and a significant part of the building layout.

Original stairs and balustrades can contribute strongly to a period interior. Before replacement or alteration, assess what can be repaired and what structural and approval requirements apply.
