Staircases

Staircase Renovation

Staircase renovation is the repair, improvement or alteration of an existing stair and its components while retaining some or all of the original construction.

The work may include repairing treads and risers, tightening strings and newels, replacing damaged spindles, renewing handrails, reducing squeaks and refinishing timber. The appropriate scope depends on the stair's condition and significance.

In an Edinburgh period property, renovation can preserve original proportions and joinery that would be difficult to reproduce through complete replacement. Careful inspection helps separate local defects from wider structural movement or unsuitable past alterations.

Changes to geometry, guarding, openings or the way the stair serves an altered layout may have broader safety and approval implications. These should be addressed early, particularly where a renovation accompanies a loft conversion or major internal remodelling.
