Stone Sill

A stone sill is the horizontal stone forming the base of a window or door opening, shaped to support the opening and direct rainwater away from the wall.

External sills normally slope outwards and project beyond the face of the wall. A groove beneath the projection helps water drip clear instead of tracking back toward the masonry.

Traditional sandstone sills in Edinburgh can suffer from cracking, surface erosion, damaged ends and inappropriate cement repairs. Defects may allow moisture to reach the wall or window junction.

Repair can involve careful local stonework, indenting or replacement, depending on condition. The sill profile, projection, drip and connection to the window should all be retained or reinstated.
